intelligent film discussion, news, reviews and competitions -- front page : new readers : the hub : 100 comments : festivals : reviews : merchandise current feature is television overtaking cinema? the question has been asked for some time now and every year seems to be coming to the fore more and more and being posed in different ways. is television overtaking cinema? is it producing better quality and more interesting stories than cinema can hope to deliver? is it a better return for studios and production companies? i know i’m watching more television shows than i ever have and i’m finding a lot more gratification from them than i am from many films i’m seeing, but seeing a great thriller in those two hours on a big screen or a home cinema still takes some beating for me. yet i can’t deny that there’s more talk of television shows that i’ve heard over films, both in my circles of friends and in my social media circles, even from the people who talk about films all the time many conversations are beginning and ending with television series. the question itself is being seen more and more and asked again and again. how do you see it? is television overtaking cinema? continue reading "is television overtaking cinema?" » written by richard brunton on april 7, 2014 | permalink | comments (2) promotion articles today's yesterday's fast and furious 7 last five reviews fast and furious 7 a most wanted man we are monster grace of monaco edge of tomorrow it's kind of a funny story paul the big lebowski get him to the greek the tunnel safety not guaranteed the island president the assault (l' assaut) earth 2 don't be afraid of the dark gravity convoy - 35th anniversary special edition (uncut) let me in 44 inch chest tinker tailor soldier spy latest news july 3, 2014 next asian unmakeable remake, audition after the remake of oldboy it seems that hollywood has the belief it can remake more asian horror/thrillers that previously were believed to be un-remake-able. i know that isn't even a word, but it should be. the news has arrived, and has piqued my interest back to the keyboard, that audition is to be remade. also known as Ôdishon, adapted from the ryû murakami novel by daisuke tengan, and directed bytakashi miike. now i'm going to take an unusual stand on this one, and perhaps upset a few people, but i now think they can do it, and if you don't then you need to have a look at the spike lee remake of oldboy. read the full story... posted by richard brunton | permalink | comments (1) old bond writers return, change again bond 24, the film to follow the successful skyfall ( review) , is set to gain two new writers. except they aren't new to the bond franchise, they're writers who just left it after the last film, neal purvis and robert wade. they've been asked to return and work on the script that john logan delivered for sam mendes to direct - logan being the writer brought in to work on skyfall after purvis and wade delivered their draft. so now the tables have turned ms broccoli and/or mr mendes, and you expect them to write. no, she doesn't expect them to die. okay that didn't work, back to the story. it's interesting to think that purvis and wade are back on the case, and you have to wonder what that means for the direction of bond. read the full story... posted by richard brunton | permalink | comments (1) may 21, 2014 godzilla sequel, surprised? come on now. there's a sequel being talked about for godzilla already after a big opening, apparently the biggest of 2014 to date, and while many are talking about it as though it was a surprise, it really wasn't was it? looking at one of my local multiplexes for screenings tomorrow i can see that godzilla has a mere seventeen in a mixture of 2d, 3d and imax, compare that with bad neighbors with nine, or the amazing spider-man 2 or the two faces of january with just four 2d screenings. x-men: days of future past has eighteen screenings on its first day out but only fifteen the following wednesday, two less than godzilla. read the full story... posted by richard brunton | permalink | comments (0) code black trailer shows powerful documentary i'm a huge fan of the channel 4 documentary series, or reality series depending on how you look at it, called 24 hours in a&e.; the programme uses fixed cameras around one of the busiest and most well respected accident and emergency departments in the uk at london's king's college hospital, recording patients as they arrive, go through their emergency treatment, staff as they work their shifts and interviewing them all after the day is over. it's a fantastically insightful and incredibly touching series that not only teaches you what our hospital staff have to deal with but also just how wonderful the human spirit can be, especially faced with pain or death. it's wonderful television that does so much more than entertain. code black looks like the american version of the television show, and in film format, and it looks like they've captured all that's great about the series and captured the drama and tension needed for the shorter cinema running time. the trailer looks fantastic, and it's all real. read the full story... posted by richard brunton | permalink | comments (0) new lucy trailer reveals everything? i was looking forward to lucy, another action and science fiction film blend written and directed by luc besson, and starring scarlett johansson, sounded like a lot of fun and some of the early shots from the film looked like a lot of fun. now i've seen the latest trailer i'm rather disappointed, i feel i've seen far too much and probably know the story of the main character. i do hate trailers like this for they do appear just to replay all the best bits from the film and potentially spoiling it all. of course it could be that there's plenty more still left in the film and that the ending hasn't been spoiled at all, but it could be, and with the feeling that it has i'm not sure i'd risk going to the cinema to see it. would you? grace of monaco, a film that looks at a small period of history in grace kelly's life where, as the princess of monaco, she was involved in the political debate between her husband, prince rainer iii of monaco and the french president charles de gaulle, is in serious trouble in america and looks like it might be dropped from release because of ego and spreadsheets. a battle has erupted between the director of the film, oliver dahan, and the american distributor, harvey weinstein, as the distributor takes the film to the edit suite to change it for the local release, one that threatens the film with losing that release. this all despite the director of la vie en rose and a cast list including nicole kidman, frank langella, tim roth, derek jacobi, and more stars from across europe and hollywood, never mind a very intriguing main character and time period to look at, as well as being talked about in terms of the american academy awards. read the full story... posted by richard brunton | permalink | comments (0) may 3, 2014 lockerbie pan am 103 film being made when i first read that there was a script being developed and a film planned within the next few years i was surprised. not that it's too soon, far from it in fact, it actually feels like there's been a little too much time passed and perhaps lockerbie and those affected by the events don't want to go back. then i read what was behind the intended story, what the events of a film would follow, and it's not what you might think. after reading the intentions i've gone from hating the idea and thinking that it was perhaps in poor taste to thinking that perhaps this story does need to be told. read the full story... posted by richard brunton | permalink | comments (0) april 26, 2014 die hard 6 rumours abound the rumours concerning die hard 6 are beginning and they are good. good in that they are enjoyable and fun to read, and if they came through would be a great thing for fans of the franchise, especially if they weren't fans of the last two. the rumours suggest that there's going to be a sixth film in the franchise and that there's going to be a significant look to the past with it. thankfully some franchises aren't looking to reboot everything. read the full story... posted by richard brunton | permalink | comments (1) next terminator: genesis begins filming, the end of a franchise? in case you were in any doubt about what the next terminator film will be doing with the story line let me put it straight for you, it's rebooting it. there have been a number of signs so far, not least the terminator: genesis title that it began production with, but there are more details now that suggest this is a little more to the franchise than simply seeing a new start of skynet. is this the film that really will put pay to the idea that james cameron would ever come back?
